Gin Blossoms revisit the tragic backstory of their multi-platinum smash 'New Miserable Experience,' which turns 25 this year. The group teetered on the edge of being dropped, and, most alarmingly, their founder and chief songwriter, guitarist Doug Hopkins, was in the throes of mental illness and alcoholism. We were all just treading water trying to make the record. Like those groups, the Gin Blossoms excelled at marrying world-weary lyrics with ebullient melodies.

The band, it seems, was damned from the beginning. He spent the next year and a half resenting the band's success, then killed himself. The Gin Blossoms were a fine band without him, but Hopkins was their secret weapon. Rarely was there a line of his that I didn't wish I'd written. He was the scholar.
